International Day of Older Persons: Staying Social, Staying Strong

October 1 is International Day of Older Persons — a day to honour the contributions, wisdom, and resilience of older people in our communities. At Right at Home, it’s also a time to celebrate something we strongly believe in: the power of connection.

As we age, staying socially engaged and active isn’t just about enjoyment — it’s a key part of healthy ageing. Research consistently shows that regular social interaction helps reduce loneliness, supports mental and physical wellbeing, and fosters a strong sense of purpose and belonging.

Why Staying Social Matters

Many older Australians want to remain independent and connected to their communities. But this can be challenging, especially for those living alone, with mobility challenges, or in unfamiliar neighbourhoods. That’s why Right at Home places a strong focus on group social activities that bring people together in meaningful ways.

Whether it’s enjoying a nature walk to admire the first signs of spring, heading to a local art gallery, joining a morning tea at the community centre, or taking part in gentle movement classes — these group moments have a lasting impact.

You’ll find our local offices running regular events, activities, and outings tailored to the interests and abilities of their clients. We don’t just run activities for the sake of it. We create genuine opportunities for older Australians to connect, participate, and thrive.

Covered by Government Funding — Did You Know?

Many people are surprised to learn that social support activities like these are funded under both the Home Care Package (HCP) program and the upcoming Support at Home program launching 1 November, 2025.

If you’re already on a Home Care Package — you may be eligible for:

  • Social group outings

  • Transport to community events

  • Support workers to accompany you on excursions

  • Wellbeing and reablement-focused activities

These are not just add-ons — they’re core services designed to help you stay connected and enjoy life to the fullest.

How to Join a Local Event

Right at Home has over 55 local offices across Australia, and each one is passionate about creating opportunities for older people to get involved and stay social. Some offices host weekly meetups, others organise seasonal outings, and many partner with local venues and community centres to ensure everyone feels welcome.

If you or your loved one is looking to join a group activity, now is the perfect time. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a regular face at community events, we’d love to welcome you.
