Eligibility is national rather than state based. Generally it applies to people over 65, or over 50 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who are finding everyday tasks harder to manage on their own. Home care supports someone in their own home. Residential aged care means moving into a facility, and it is assessed and funded differently. Most people we speak to want to stay where they are, and home care exists to make that possible for as long as it safely can be. Right at Home provides in home care only.

There is no single best provider, and be wary of anyone who says there is. Ask three things. Will the same carer come each visit, or someone different each time. What happens after hours and on weekends. And what the provider charges in fees on top of the care itself, because that is what decides how many hours of actual care your funding buys.

That rule belongs to residential aged care, not home care. It refers to the number of days of leave a resident can take from a facility each year while keeping their place. Home care has no equivalent, because the care comes to the person rather than the person moving into a facility. If you go away or into hospital, services simply pause and restart.
