Reablement vs Maintenance

| Understanding Your Support

When accessing home care support, you may hear the terms reablement and maintenance — and wonder what they actually mean for you or your loved one.

While both types of support are designed to help people live safely at home, they serve different purposes. Understanding the difference can help you make informed choices about your care and feel more confident navigating the Support at Home program.

What Is Reablement?

Reablement is a short-term, goal-focused approach to care that supports people to regain or improve their ability to do everyday tasks.

It’s often used:

  • After illness, injury or hospitalisation

  • Following a fall or health setback

  • When confidence or mobility has declined

  • During a period of change or recovery

Rather than doing everything for you, reablement focuses on supporting you to do more for yourself, safely and at your own pace.

Reablement may involve:

  • Practising daily tasks with guidance

  • Building strength, balance and confidence

  • Re-establishing routines

  • Gradually reducing support as ability improves

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s progress.

What Is Maintenance Support?

Maintenance support is ongoing assistance that helps you continue daily life when your needs are long-term or unlikely to change.

It’s most suitable when:

  • A condition is stable or permanent

  • Support is needed to maintain safety and comfort

  • Independence can’t be restored further, but quality of life can be preserved

Maintenance focuses on consistency and reliability, ensuring your needs are met day-to-day.

Maintenance support may include:

Can You Have Both?

Yes — and many people do.

Reablement and maintenance are not all-or-nothing.
You may:

  • Start with reablement after a setback

  • Transition to maintenance support over time

  • Use reablement in specific areas while receiving maintenance support in others

Your Care Partner works with you to determine what combination best supports your goals, health and lifestyle.

How Right at Home Helps You Choose the Right Support

At Right at Home, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach.

Our Care Partners:

  • Take time to understand your goals and preferences

  • Assess what you can do independently and where support helps

  • Recommend reablement, maintenance, or a combination

  • Review your care as your needs change

The aim is always to support independence, dignity and quality of life — now and into the future.

Choosing Support That Fits Your Life

Whether you’re working towards regaining confidence or need reliable ongoing support, the right care can make everyday life feel safer and more manageable.

Understanding the difference between reablement and maintenance helps you take an active role in planning your care — and ensures support works with you, not just for you.
