More Than a Ride: Staying Independent with Transport

| Independence - Transport

Regain confidence and stay connected with transport support that helps you get out and about again, without relying on family. Meet David Nelson, a Right at Home Sydney Central & Eastern Suburbs client of three years. Read on to learn how transportion gave him his independence again.

For a long time, I didn’t realise how much I’d stopped asking for things. My daughter and son-in-law were already juggling work, kids, sport, and everything else life throws at you. They always made sure I got to my medical appointments—rushing out of work early or rearranging their day just to drive me across town. And, because they did so much already, I never felt comfortable saying the words I really wanted to say.

  • Could you take me to the shops?
  • Could you drop me at the bowls club?
  • Could I visit my mates this week?

It felt like too much. So, most weeks… I just stayed home.

The Day Everything Shifted

When my GP suggested I look into extra support, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t want a chauffeur or someone fussing over me—I just wanted a bit of independence back. Right at Home changed things almost immediately. My caregiver didn’t just “drive me places. They helped me live my life again. The first week, we went to my follow-up appointment. Easy. The second week, my caregiver asked, “Anywhere else you’d like to go today?” I said, “Actually… could we stop at the shops?” He smiled. “Of course we can.” And just like that, something I’d been putting off for months felt simple again.

Getting Back into the Community

Before long, I was doing things I’d quietly given up on:

  • Having lunch with a mate I hadn’t seen in ages
  • Picking up my own groceries instead of relying on the kids
  • Browsing the hardware store like I used to
  • Getting to community events without needing anyone to rearrange their day

It wasn’t glamorous or grand—it was my life, coming back piece by piece. And the best bit? My family felt the difference too. My daughter told me, “Dad, I feel like you have your freedom again. And we finally have our weekends back.” Right at Home didn’t just help me get from point A to point B. They helped me reclaim the things that make me me.

Why Transport Support Matters

For many older Australians, asking for help with transport feels like “being a bother”—even when family members are more than happy to do it.

Right at Home’s transport services take that pressure off everyone:

  • No more worrying about burdening the kids
  • No more missing activities because no one is free to drive
  • No more isolation due to lack of safe transport
  • Support that goes beyond the car ride—help with getting in, out, and around safely

It’s more than just a ride. It’s independence, dignity, and connection.

A Little Support Goes a Long Way

These days, I don’t hesitate to get out and about. I meet up with friends. I run errands. I go where I want, when I want—safely and confidently. And my family? They get to be family again, not unpaid taxi drivers. We enjoy our time together so much more now that it isn’t rushed or stressful.
