The Story Behind Father’s Day

The origins of Father’s Day can be traced back to 5 July 1908, when a church in West Virginia held the first known event dedicated specifically to honouring fathers. The special Sunday service commemorated the 362 men who lost their lives in the tragic Fairmont Coal Company mining explosions in Monongah, West Virginia, the previous December. While meaningful, it was a one-time remembrance rather than an annual celebration.

The following year, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, helped transform the idea into a lasting tradition. Raised alongside her five siblings by her widowed father, Dodd wanted to create a day that recognised fathers in the same way Mother’s Day honoured mothers. She campaigned tirelessly, gaining support from local churches, businesses, the YMCA, and government officials. Her efforts paid off when Washington State celebrated the first statewide Father’s Day on 19 June 1910.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated around the world. In the United States, it is observed on the third Sunday in June, while in Australia we celebrate our fathers and father figures on the first Sunday in September.
