World Immunisation Week, celebrated in the last week of April, aims to highlight the collective action needed to protect people from vaccine-preventable diseases. 

The goal of World Immunisation Week is for more children, adults, and their communities to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases, allowing them to live happier and healthier lives.   

At its inception in 1974, the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) focused on protecting all children against six childhood illnesses. That number has grown to 13 universally recommended vaccines spanning a lifetime and 17 additional vaccines with context dependent recommendations.  

This year World Immunization Week will celebrate 50 years of EPI. 

We are lucky to have access to the Australian Government’s free National Immunisation Program (NIP), a human right but also a privilege that many countries cannot guarantee.

Check the NIP Schedule, which outlines the series of immunisations given at specific times throughout your life from birth to adulthood. All vaccines listed in the NIP Schedule are free. Eligibility for free vaccines under the NIP is linked to eligibility for Medicare benefits.
