September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

| News

September is International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and cities around the world are lighting up landmarks blue to raise awareness.

According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in Australian men with 20,000 diagnoses and close to 3,300 deaths each year. Prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer kills women.

If you are over 50 years of age – or over 40 if you have a family history of prostate cancer – talk to your GP about testing for the disease.

The test most used to aid early detection of prostate cancer is the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test. This is not a diagnostic test as it can only indicate changes in the prostate. Cancer Council advises that if you are concerned about prostate cancer you should talk to your doctor and make an informed choice about whether to have one of the tests designed to find early signs of prostate cancer, in view of the potential risks and benefits.

Right at Home supports people with specific care situations including recovering from cancer. If you need home care services give Right at Home a call today.
