International Women’s Day 2021

| News

It is once again International Women’s Day (IWD)! We would like to give a huge shoutout to all our female caregivers.

IWD Blog

While we love and appreciate our male care staff and value their contribution, professional caregivers and registered nurses are predominantly women, and the number of informal female carers in Australia is almost double that of male carers.

This year’s IWD global theme is ‘Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World’.

Once again, UN Women Australia on Friday last week hosted a series of IWD Lunches across the country. These often-sold-out events have been run by UN Women Australia since 1990, representing the United Nations Gender Equality Agency. At Right at Home in Australia, most of our franchise offices are owned soley or in partnership by females and the majority of our head office leadership team are women. We are proud to demonstrate gender diversity and financial empowerment to women in our community.

A history of International Women’s Day from the International Women’s Day Agency

In 1908, against a backdrop of terrible working conditions and exploitation, 15,000 women took to the streets in New York protesting for shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.

The next year the Socialist Party of America announced a National Women’s Day to honour the strikers, and in 1910 it went global – the Socialist International voted for the creation of a Women’s Day to advocate for suffrage. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911, and more than a million people turned out to rallies in Europe.

For most of the 20th century International Women’s Day was acknowledged and celebrated by people at the grassroots level, a rallying point for social justice. It wasn’t until 1975 – International Women’s Year – that the United Nations adopted International Women’s Day on 8 March, when it is still held.

Right at Home values its high quality care staff and the family caregivers of our clients, whom we know, make a differrence in the lives of their loved ones. At Right at Home, we are passionate about caring. Right at Home's mission is to " improve the quality of life for those we serve". We thank our team of amazing women (and men) who deliver this mission every day!
