June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. Each year, Bowel Cancer Australia puts on its signature month-long event to raise awareness of Australia's second deadliest cancer and funds for prevention, early diagnosis, research, quality treatment and care.
According to Bowel Cancer Australia, the disease claims the lives of 103 Australians every week (5,354 people a year) but it's one of the most treatable types of cancer when detected early. While the risk of bowel cancer increases significantly with age, the disease doesn't discriminate and can affect people of all ages.
Early and regular screening. Most bowel cancers develop slowly from pre-cancerous growths called polyps. Early detection and removal of these polyps prevent the development of bowel cancer. The Australian Government’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) offers free screening tests to Australians aged 50 to 70. Eligible Australians who hold a Medicare card or Veterans Affairs card will automatically receive a free test kit in the mail around their birthday.
Eat healthily with lots of fibre. Evidence suggests that eating fibre can help prevent bowel cancer by reducing the risk of constipation and inflammation of the bowel wall.
Exercise regularly. Use your smart phone to track your steps! How did you do today?
Don’t smoke. Enough said.
Know your family history. Heredity plays a big role in bowel cancer with up to 20% of people who develop the disease having a relative who has had it.
