6 Reasons Older Adults Should Consider Getting Their Vaccines

| News

Australia has just come out of one of its worst flu seasons. Vaccines save lives at every age. For older adults, they play an even more important role. Although there are those with valid reasons they wish not to get vaccinated, below is a list of many benefits to vaccination.

For the elderly and vulnerable, here are some of the biggest reasons why staying up to date on your vaccines is important to your health and quality of life.

  1. Our immune system weakens as we grow older
  2. Older adults are at higher risk of dying from vaccine-preventable illnesses
  3. Getting vaccinated helps protect babies and children who are too young for vaccines
  4. Getting our shots helps us protect immunocompromised people in the community
  5. Vaccines prevent illnesses that cause serious, life-changing complications
  6. Most vaccines are covered by Medicare or private insurance

So, what vaccines are recommended for older adults?

  • Seasonal influenza: Your doctor may recommend the high dose shot for people aged 65+
  • Shingles: A two-dose vaccination is recommended for adults 50+
  • Pneumonia (pneumococcal disease): Two types of this vaccine are recommended, administered in intervals
  • Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap): A booster every 10 years is recommended
  • COVID-19: Be vaccinated, including boosters, as recommended
  • Other vaccines may also be recommended by your doctor, especially if you plan on traveling abroad, or if a specific health concern warrants them. These might include measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), hepatitis A and B, and meningococcal disease.

Talk to your doctor about the immunizations recommended for you.
