Hearing Awareness Month with Right at Home

| Medical

Right at Home, Australia's quality in home care provider and an approved provider of Home Care Packages for support at home, is keeping you informed about hearing as you or your loved ones grow older.

March is Hearing Awareness Month!

The campaign commenced with World Hearing Day on March 3 to raise awareness of how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote better ear protection and health worldwide.

Did you know there are four million Australians living with hearing loss? And this figure is predicted to increase to almost nine million by 2050 as the population ages.

Common signs of hearing loss include:

  • Difficulty hearing in noisy environments
  • Frequently asking others to repeat themselves
  • Struggling to understand conversations over the phone
  • Turning up the volume on the TV or radio
  • Difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds, such as children’s voices or birdsong
  • Withdrawal from social situations
  • Fatigue or headaches after a conversation
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

Tips for communicating with someone with hearing loss:

  • Be sure to face the person with hearing loss positioning yourself so that they can see your mouth and body language.
  • Be sure the environment is well light so that the person with hearing loss can respond to visual clues.
  • Be sure to reduce the amount of background noise.
  • Where possible, sit in the quieter area of a restaurant, lobby, or office.
  • Never talk about the person with hearing loss as if they are not there and include them in the conversation.
  • Use the person with hearing loss’s name so they know you are speaking to them and not someone else.
  • Announce your words carefully and where necessary more slowly but don’t exaggerate or shout.
  • If the person with hearing loss does not understand a word or phrase, choose a different one rather than repeating it.

The most important thing is that people with hearing loss remain active, confident, and included in social situations.
