PTSD Awareness Day with Right at Home

| Health & Wellness

Each year on 27 June, PTSD Awareness Day recognises the effects post-traumatic stress has on the lives of those impacted by it.

This international day raises awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to ensure more people know about the condition and more people who suffer PTSD will seek treatment. PTSD is the most common mental health disorder after depression.

According to Australian mental health organisation Beyond Blue, there are four main types of PTSD experiences.

  1. Re-living the traumatic event. You may re-live the event through unwanted and recurring memories. These often come as vivid images and nightmares. You may have intense emotional or physical reactions when reminded of the event. For example, sweating, heart palpitations or panic.
  1. Being overly alert or wound up. You may have trouble sleeping, feel irritable and find it hard to concentrate. You may become easily startled and constantly on the lookout for signs of danger.
  1. Avoiding reminders of the event. You may deliberately avoid activities, places, people, thoughts or feelings associated with the event that bring back painful memories.
  1. Feeling emotionally numb. You may lose interest in day-to-day activities or feel emotionally flat and numb. You may also feel cut off and detached from friends and family.

While only a psychologist or psychiatrist can diagnose post-traumatic stress disorder, Beyond Blue provides a comprehensive checklist that can help you decide whether you or a loved one needs to take the next step and seek support.

We at Right at Home Australia can provide numerous in-home care services that can help you do more than just survive a loved one’s struggle with the effects of a mental health disorder like PTSD. Contact us today.
