What to Look for in a Home Care Packages Provider

| Government

Let it be known that not all Home Care Package (HCP) providers are created equal. If you decide you would like to remain at home in your later years, finding the right HCP provider is important.

Home Care Package approved providers are private or public businesses that have satisfied the Australian Government Department of Health’s requirements to provide high-quality home care services to eligible recipients.

Right at Home is one such approved provider. What sets us apart from other providers is our quality and process. We efficiently assess and understand your unique situation and recommend a custom plan guaranteed to cater to all your care needs. This gets you the care you need as soon as you need it. Our goal is to protect our caregivers, while keeping you and your families safe, healthy, and living a fulfilling life, right at home.

So, what should you consider when looking for a Home Care Packages provider?

Know the Costs

The HCP Program is needs-based and may not entirely cover the care services you need.

Right at Home is a full-service home care business. This means that we can provide services to families who have the means to pay for themselves or families who qualify for support under the government-funded HCP system. The quality and standard of your service is the same whether you come to us as a private client or through the HCP program.

From the moment you call a Right at Home office, we immediately consider your specific needs. On the initial call, we ask questions to form a basic needs assessment and provide a cost estimate.

After the call, we set up an in-home visit with you and the rest of your family. This visit allows us to gather more information, answer questions, and let you understand how Right at Home can help. A more detailed service quote is provided at the end of the client assessment performed by the care manager.

Know the People

Knowing that the caregivers entering your home are properly screened, adequately trained, and insured is vital.

When choosing an HCP provider, consider asking these questions:

  • Are the caregivers allocated to me adequately trained to cope with my changing needs?
  • Are the caregivers adequately supervised by a registered nurse?
  • Does my care provider perform ID and background checks, driving records, federal police clearances, and state abuse registry checks?
  • Does my care provider check employee references and work history?

Unlike other providers, Right at Home employs its caregivers directly, ensuring they are properly screened, adequately trained, and insured before entering your home. We also supervise our caregivers, ensuring that you are receiving quality care as per your custom care plan and home care agreement. We provide our people with insurance cover and ongoing professional development and training to ensure that we provide the best possible care.

Know the Risks

Knowing that your care provider is adequately insured is equally important. Providers should carry at least $10 million in professional indemnity insurance and $20 million in public liability insurance.

When choosing an HCP provider, consider asking these questions:

  • Is my caregiver's car roadworthy and insured?
  • If me or my caregiver is injured at my residence, who is responsible?
  • What does my homeowner's insurance policy say about injuries to domestic employees?
  • Does my care provider have adequate workers compensation insurance?

Know Your Care

The care we provide at Right at Home is driven in all respects by the Custom Care Plan (CCP). The CCP contains measurable goals and outcomes and acts as a nursing prescription designed to evolve as your needs change over time. We regularly review and audit our processes and ask for feedback, ensuring that if/when your needs change, we are adapting the care plan to suit.

Our experienced registered nurses and care managers will make recommendations and provide guidance to you and your family on ways your lifestyle can be made more comfortable. Our care managers make follow-up visits with the designated carers to ensure that the CCP is correctly implemented. The CCP and its care notes are kept in a folder at your home so that family members can check on progress at any time.

The CCP is reviewed by the care manager every six months in consultation with you and your family, or sooner if your needs change or if you ask for a review. Our care managers and registered nurse supervisors are available 24/7 to deal with emergency situations. To contact your local office search for their details here
