World Hypertension Day – Information from Right at Home, Australia's trusted home care provider

| Chronic Disease

This Sunday will mark World Hypertension Day 2020.

Taking place on May 17, the annual event aims to draw attention to the prevalence of hypertension globally.

According to the International Society of Hypertension (ISH), high blood pressure over a long period of time (hypertension) affects more than 1.4 billion people worldwide and accounts for more than 28,000 deaths per day. Hypertension can lead to serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure or kidney disease.

The ISH last week released its 2020 Global Hypertension Practice Guidelines to help reduce the burden of this significant health threat affecting people from every country and socio-economic group. The ISH said that these guidelines are the first of its kind to be developed specifically for the management of hypertension in all regions of the world, regardless of population or resources. The ISH said that this is “particularly important” because an estimated 72% of the global hypertensive population live in low- and middle-income countries.

Roughly 10 per cent of the Australian population is affected by hypertension.

Health Direct, an Australian Government-funded service, suggests five simple steps that you can take to help lower your blood pressure.

1.         Regular exercise

2.         Healthy eating

3.         Low sodium diet

4.         Maintain a healthy weight for your body

5.         Limit your alcohol intake

If you would like to learn more about hypertension, you can access the ISH Guidelines here.
