On the 17th of May each year, the world recognises Hypertension Day. Hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure, is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease and an important determinant of cardiovascular risk.

In its Guide to Management of Hypertension in Adults 2016, the Heart Foundation says that the evaluation and diagnosis of hypertension should include blood pressure measurements, medical history, physical examination, assessment of absolute CVD risk (where appropriate), laboratory investigations and further diagnostic tests when required.
