Parkinson's Awareness Month with Right at Home

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Suitably, last week we published an article on home safety for seniors with Parkinson’s Disease and related conditions. But what is Parkinson’s and how do we identify and treat it.

What many people may not understand about Parkinson’s symptoms is that there are more than 50. What’s more, many of these symptoms are not visible, referred to as non-motor symptoms.

Parkinson’s NSW explains these symptoms using The Parkinson’s Iceberg.

Visible motor symptoms include:

  • Rigidity
  • Tremor
  • Akinesia/Bradykinesia
  • Postural Disturbance

Invisible non-motor symptoms include:

  • Bladder Control
  • Constipation
  • Intimacy
  • Swallowing and Communication
  • Anxiety and Depression

While there is no cure for Parkinson's disease, symptoms can be treated with a combination of medicines, surgery, and lifestyle changes.

The main goal of ‘treating’ someone with Parkinson’s is to help improve and maintain their quality of life. Check out 5 ways to help someone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. You can also download our free Dementia and Cognitive Change Guide for further information.
