International Week of the Deaf with Right at Home Australia

| Ageing

Right at Home Australia's premier homecare provider and disability support provider reminds us that September 23rd is International Day of Sign Languages, an important part of the International Week of the Deaf.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. The resolution establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services in sign language, including quality education available in sign language, is vital to the growth and development of the deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with deaf communities.

Did you know that globally, deaf people collectively use more than 300 sign languages? The Deafness Forum of Australia explains that sign languages are natural languages that are structurally different from spoken languages. The Forum estimates that 73% of Australians aged over 70 have mild to severe hearing loss. This percentage rises as age increases. As many as 85% of people in nursing homes are typically hearing impaired.

Many older people who would benefit from hearing aids wait six to 10 years before speaking to their health care professional. People need motivation to seek and then persevere in the use of hearing aids. Gentle encouragement by carers can help, and that is where Right at Home can step in. The willingness of carers to assist hearing impaired people in managing their hearing aids is critical for older people who quite commonly have reduced finger and arm dexterity or reduced vision. Right at Home is a trusted homecare provider that assists the elderly and those living with a disability in their own homes. We design our care and support around our clients who are at the centre of everything we do. We develop a customised care plan around assessed needs and ensure that the care delivered is designed to 'improve the quality of life for those we serveTM'

If you or someone you love, needs support to maintain their independence and continue living at home think about organising in-home care. To learn more about Right at Home, home care services, contact us today.
