STEPtember for Cerebral Palsy with Right at Home

| News

This STEPtember for Cerebral Palsy, we spoke with Right at Home Brand Ambassador Lucas Protopapas. Lucas has cerebral palsy and is an active member of the Australian Para Bowls community and a Right at Home Pathways Jackaroo.

"STEPtember is something very close to my heart as it’s raising money for people living with Cerebral Palsy, which is what I have," Lucas told Right at Home.

"The Cerebral Palsy community is fortunate to have many healthcare workers continually researching and providing ways to enhance our experiences and ability to connect to services.

"I am lucky to have a wonderful network of friends and family who all assist me to achieve and find my place in the community."

Lucas will this month join in the challenge to complete 10,000 steps a day from 1 to 30 September.

"It is a great challenge for physical exercise and mental health as well. I have been doing this challenge for three years now and am really enjoying it," Lucas said.

To achieve his 10,000 steps a day, Lucas goes for a walk and then plays "lots" of bowls.

If you or someone you know might be interesting in giving lawn bowls a go, Lucas says to give it a go.

"Para bowls means a lot to me," he continued.

"When I first started playing bowls, I wanted to play open bowls not para, but in 2010 my Mum encouraged me to give it a go!

"I really enjoyed it and since that day I haven’t looked back. Now I try to encourage people to come and try lawn bowls. I'm sure if they do, they will not be disappointed.

"There are many pathways for para bowlers to succeed, from playing socially in their club to representing their state or country.

"The para bowling community is so friendly and welcoming, those involved are dedicated to helping everyone achieve.

"We have lots of fun!"

Here’s how to participate in STEPtember:

  • STEP up and challenge yourself to move 10,000 steps a day throughout September to support people with cerebral palsy.
  • Create a team with your friends, colleagues, or family members to connect and drive some healthy competition – double the fun and impact!
  • Download the STEPtember App, log your activities, and share your challenge progress with your network to ask for donations.
