After more than two years, Royal Commissioners the Honourable Tony Pagone QC and Lynelle Briggs AO last week presented the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety to the Governor General. The Report was tabled in parliament on 1 March 2021.

The Commission’s main purpose was to consider the design of Australia’s future aged care system. Fundamental to this were three themes: understanding the community’s attitudes to older people, their level of awareness of how the system currently operates, and their future wants and needs for their own old age.

The Commission undertook qualitative research that included 274 people from the general community and targeted diversity groups. The research provides a detailed snapshot of the attitudes, behaviours and experiences in the population.

In their Final Report, titled Care, Dignity and Respect, Commissioners Pagone and Briggs call for “fundamental reform of the aged care system” making 148 recommendations.

Over the next few weeks, Right at Home will delve into some of the Commission’s key findings as they pertain to in-home care. We also aim to explore themes including community views of older people and community understanding and perceptions of aged care.
