The month of October is Queensland Seniors Month. This year’s theme is “social connections” emphasising the prevailing theme of the pandemic – to stay connected despite physical and geographical distance.

Beginning on the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, the month will end on National Grandparents Day. Queensland Seniors Month is coordinated by Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland on behalf of the Queensland Government. A member of the COTA Federation, COTA is a for purpose registered charity committed to advancing the rights, needs, interests and futures of people as they age.

COTA believes, and we agree, that many elderly people can suffer systemic inequalities, disadvantages and discrimination, and we need to put a stop to it.

Queensland Seniors Week was inaugurated in 1960 and was first called Old People’s Week. As we can see, the language surrounding ageing and the elderly has changed for the better.
