Men’s Health Week is celebrated in June each year. This week, from the 14th to the 20th, Men’s Health Week is helping draw attention to the health and wellness needs of Australia’s male population.
Men’s Health Week was inaugurated by the US Congress in 1994. Later in 2002, at the 2nd World Congress on Men’s Health in Vienna, Austria, six leading men’s health organisations came together to run an international event each June to coincide with Father’s Day in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Today, International Men’s Health Week aims to increase awareness and encourage inter- and intra-national institutions to provide better care for health issues affecting men globally. Affiliates include The Men's Health Forum in England and Wales, Men's Health Society of BC, in British Columbia, Rotary International, the San Maarten Public Health Department in the Netherlands Antilles, the Men's Health Information and Resource Centre (MHIRC) in Australia and Men's Health Network in the United States and other countries.
According to the MHIRC, a boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old. From the start, boys suffer more illness, more accidents, and die earlier than their female counterparts. What’s more, men take their own lives at four times the rate of women.
So, what can we do to help the physical and mental health of our boys and men?
There are several helplines available to those who may be uneasy about reaching out. MensLine Australia offers telephone and online counselling to Aussie men anywhere, anytime. If you or someone you know needs assistance with anger, depression, stress, anxiety, or transitioning from one life phase to another, don’t hesitate to give us a call on 1300 363 802. We can see if our in-home care services could be of help or refer you to a health professional.
In good health.
