International Men's Health Week 2024

| News

International Men's Health Week celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and takes place in Australia from Monday, 10 June to Sunday, 16 June 2024. Australia's premier home care provider, Right at Home, shares information on men's health.

This year the Australian Men’s Health Forum is focusing on the theme Men’s Health Checks.

Here are Seven of the Most Important Men’s Health Checks

1. Check Your Numbers. Know your body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.

2. Get a Sense Check. Also important to keep on top of is the health of your teeth and gums. Be sure to regularly visit your dentist, audiologist, and optometrist.

3. Check Down Under. Regularly feel for any lumps or swelling in the region. You can also ask your partner or health care professional.

4. Check for Cancer. There are many cancer types that can affect men. Some, like bowel cancer, can be treated successfully if they’re found early but fewer than 50% are found at this stage. Your risk of bowel cancer increases as you get older and at 50 you should start screening for the disease, even if you have no symptoms. If you have a family history of bowel cancer speak to your doctor as screening may need to start earlier. Living in Australia means that regular visits to the dermatologist to check for skin cancer is an absolute must.

5. Check your Heart. If you are 45 and over, or 30 and over if you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, you should have a heart health check. This involves checking your blood pressure and other aspects of your health that affect your risk of heart disease such as your family history, whether you have diabetes, and whether you smoke.

6. Check your Head. Check in with yourself, your friends and family, and a health care professional if you are worried about your mental health or just want to learn more about the signs of deteriorating mental health.

7. Check Your Habits. As we age, it gets ever-more important to limit alcohol consumption, eliminate cigarette and tobacco use, and consult a professional about a healthy, balanced diet.
