International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

| News

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month was first declared by former United States President Barack Obama in 2010. Since then, cancer organisations around the world have used the month of September to put the spotlight on children's cancer and highlight the need for improved diagnosis, treatment and outcomes.

In September 2020, charities around the globe honour Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by raising awareness and critical funds for childhood cancer. The Gold Ribbon is the international awareness symbol of childhood cancer. In the US, these groups include the American Childhood Cancer Organisation and the American Children’s Cancer Foundation, while here in Australia participants include the Children’s Cancer Foundation and the Childhood Cancer Association. Sadly, seventy per cent of Australians are unaware that more children die from cancer than any other disease in this country.

The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month or The Kids Cancer Project in Australia is to raise awareness of the types of cancers that primarily affect children, as well as to help raise funds for research and family support.
