The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence has a new name! Bullying No Way: National Week of Action.
Bullying No Way Week, from 12 to 16 August 2024, is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative and connects schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent bullying.
The theme for 2024 is 'Everyone Belongs'.
While the National Day of Action Against Bullying & Violence is aimed at schools, bullying and violence are sadly obstacles people of all ages may face.
Bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence are all interpersonal behaviours that can create or contribute to negative social situations and environments. Identifying whether a situation is bullying or something else helps to determine the most appropriate response.
Elder abuse is a huge topic for us here at Right at Home.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), 1 in 6 (15%) people in Australia experienced elder abuse in 2020, 1 in 2 people who perpetrate elder abuse are a family member, and 1 in 3 people who experienced elder abuse sought help from a third party.
The 2021 AIFS study collected information on the perpetrators of elder abuse. While adult children were the most common perpetrators overall, patterns varied substantially depending on the type of abuse. For instance, psychological, financial and physical abuse were most often perpetrated by adult children of the older person, but there were almost no reports of sexual abuse perpetrated by adult children. A similar proportion of perpetrators of neglect were adult children (24%) and spouse/partners of the older person (25%).
If children can learn to work together to implement evidence-informed, positive, and proactive solutions to recognise and prevent bullying and violence, then as they mature into adults they should have the right foundation for empathy, understanding, and care their older loved ones need and deserve.
If you need support as an older person or an advocate, you can call the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) on 1800 237 981 or email the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP) NACAP@health.gov.au, or call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.
