Australia’s health care workers are being strongly advised by the Federal Department of Health to get their flu vaccination by the end of this month.
Minister for Aged Care Richard Colbeck said that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is even more important to be vigilant about the flu this year.
“Our Aged Care workers are doing an exceptional job caring for our most vulnerable Australians in very challenging circumstances,” Minister Colbeck said.
“I am urging all care workers who work with older Australians, whether through residential facilities or in-home care, to heed this advice and get vaccinated against the flu.
“Senior Australians are the most at risk from serious illness from the flu, which is why it is essential that care workers are vaccinated.”
According to the Department, flu vaccinations are free for residents 65 years and older.
Update:
For aged care workers, these rules also apply:
- from 1 May, you must have your influenza vaccination to work in or visit an aged care facility
- if you’re a residential aged care worker, you must not go to work if you have a fever or symptoms of a respiratory illness
