Disability Action Week 2021 with Right at Home Australia

| Disability

Following International Day of Persons with Disabilities, held each year on the 3rd of December, we are this week celebrating Disability Action Week.

Disability Action Week is a Queensland Government initiative to encourage businesses to open up and encourage workforce diversity.

A diverse workforce includes people not just from different races, and cultural backgrounds, but also people living with disabilities. People with disability, like all employees, bring a range of skills and abilities to the workplace. Employing people with disability can strengthen an organisation through a more diverse, inclusive and stable workforce. A diverse workplace allows for more ideas. A diversity of talent means a broader range of skills and experiences among employees, which increases the potential for increased productivity.

The Disability Action Week 2021 theme is 'workforce diversity—open up to opportunity' and highlights the possibilities available to employers willing to embrace opportunities for employing people with disability by taking advantage of the support available.

According to the Queensland Government, more than one million Australians with disability are working in paid employment, making up just 10 per cent of the national workforce. Over 200,000 working-age people with disability intend to work or are actively looking for work. This means that with a little planning and support, employers can access a wealth of talent and skills that a diverse workforce can bring. And there is support available for employers in employing people with disability. This includes information and grants to make reasonable adjustments to workplaces.

The Queensland Government’s Department of Seniors, Disability Services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships has incredible resources available for employers and employees alike.
