Caring for Your Elderly Valentine at Home with Help from Australia’s Respected Home Care Provider

| News

Whether you are young or old, Valentine’s day can be celebrated to honour your loved one.

As a home care provider, we see many of our clients supported and cared for by their spouses, many of whom were their childhood sweethearts. Nothing is more beautiful than seeing enduring love and support for one another right through to the elderly years when care and assistance for your loved one is so vital. As home care providers we provide assistance in the home which help keep couples together in their familiar surroundings.

Origins of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, also called St. Valentine’s Day holiday (February 14) is a day when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. Not surprisingly Valentine’s day has Roman origins and it was celebrated during the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was held at the coming of spring and included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery when boys drew the names of girls from a love urn on the feast of the Lupercalia (February 15). The custom continued through the Christian era and in order to adapt the practice to Christianity, the church transferred it to the feast of St. Valentine. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine's Day*.

How has the tradition progressed?

Formal messages, or valentines, appeared in the 1500s, and by the late 1700s, commercially printed cards were being used with the first commercial valentines printed in the mid-1800s in the United States.
