World Alzheimer’s Awareness Day #Dementia2019

On World Alzheimer's Day, September 21 of each year, Alzheimer's organizations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer's and dementia.

Part of World Alzheimer's Month, this year's focus is stigma. 2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries.

The impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem that requires global action.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, a group of disorders that impairs mental functioning. Every 68 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer's disease. Known as a family disease, because the chronic stress of watching a loved one slowly decline affects everyone, Alzheimer's can be extremely impactful. Simple changes to your everyday life can protect the brain, body and heart and can help reduce the risk of developing dementia. Visit yourbrainmatters.org.au for more information.

In Australia more than 436,000 Australians are living with dementia, with an estimated 250 people with dementia joining the population each day which is estimated to increase to almost 1.1 million in 2056 in Australia if there is no medical breakthrough.
