Remembering the Fallen – Remembrance Day 2017

| News

November 11, 2017, will mark the 99th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18).

On this day of November every year, people around the world observe one minute's silence at 11 am in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. In Australia, the Remembrance Day National Ceremony includes a formal wreath-laying at the Australian War Memorial.

History

Celebrated around the world Remembrance Day evolved out of Armistice Day, which celebrated the events of 11 November 1918 in which an armistice was agreed to during the First World War between the Allies and Germany which was the agreement that ended the fighting on the Western Front. The Armistice took effect, at 11 a.m. Paris time on 11 November 1918 ("the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"), and marked a victory for the Allies and a complete defeat for Germany, although not formally a surrender.

The poem "In Flanders Fields" stimulated the images of the red poppy which later became the symbol of Remembrance Day. The custom to wear a red poppy on the anniversary started in Georgia (USA) and spread to Europe and the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth.

Today Remembrance Day is a memorial for those fallen during World War One and in recent conflicts around the globe. More than 102,000 Australian servicemen and women have been killed in a range of conflicts since before federation and the day is remembered annually by the Australian community. Each day the story of one of the fallen servicemen or women listed on the Roll of Honour is told at the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. Traditionally on the 11th of November, the eulogy for the Unknown Australian Soldier, delivered in 1993 by then Prime Minister the Honourable Paul Keating, is read at the Last Post Ceremony.

"While we can never truly repay the debt we owe our heroes, the least we should do for our brave veterans is to ensure that the government takes a proactive approach to deliver the services and benefits they have earned, so they can access the care they need and so richly deserve." – Kristen Gillibrand.
