In the modern tech start-up world, anyone who is ageing and has years of experience is considered 'overrated'
In this article published in Senior Planet, an innovative South Korean firm is featured because of its policy to hire ageing workers.
An article written by Dan Lyons for the Observer explains his experience as a 52 year old in the Silicon Valley startup HubSpot where ageism wasn't even apologised for but instead was encouraged. In his book, 'Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Start-Up Bubble', Dan goes onto explain that places like Google, Facebook, Apple, and HubSpot actively encourage a 'frat house' like culture.
In contrast the incredible South Korean tech start-up, EverYoung, is a digital-content monitoring company, and since it opened in 2013, has only hired people over age 55. The oldest employee is 83. The founder of EverYoung, Chung Eunsung has tried to address the issue of age discrimination in South Korea where people over late middle age are overlooked for employment.
Company managers report that the older staff have superior attention to detail checking their work thoroughly, which reportedly was hard to find in younger employees. They believe the seniors focus on their work better and are also happy to leave their phones in lockers, which would be totally unacceptable to younger workers. Incredibly they all welcome the learning of new skills and demonstrate that age is no barrier to learning new technologies. EverYoung accommodate the seniors' needs by making their employees take a 10 minute break every hour and work shifts that are only 4 hours long. What a great idea!
The founder of EverYoung hopes that he can not only change the lives of seniors but breathe life into the local economy, too. What a heart-warming story that makes you think there is hope for the future generation!
